Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf Chairman Imran Khan has said that he is ready to go to jail but he does not understand why the establishment supports every step of the government. In an exclusive interview with BBC Urdu after the police attempted to arrest Imran Khan on Tuesday, he alleged that the attempt to arrest him was fulfilling promises made by the current army chief. On the occasion of the appointment of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on behalf of the establishment.
Imran Khan said that the current government cannot do anything without the support of the establishment and he regrets that today the army and the biggest political party of the country are being brought face to face. It will not last even a day. I regret that the promises made to Nawaz Sharif at the time of his appointment as the army chief are being fulfilled. Which country creates distance between the people and the army?’ It should be noted that earlier Imran Khan had expressed his satisfaction on the occasion of the appointment of the current Army Chief.
When the concerned authorities were questioned about the allegations leveled against Imran Khan’s establishment, they rejected the allegations and said that ‘all such allegations are baseless and frivolous without any evidence. Such lies and accusations are aimed at gaining political interests. The reality is that a political leader who is promoting the rule of law for all is himself openly flouting the law and inciting violence to avoid being brought to justice.’
When Imran Khan was asked, what will the current Army Chief General Asim Munir gain by taking such actions against him? Imran Khan said that ‘I do not understand this. I myself am surprised that a strange atmosphere has developed. I do not understand the army chief why he is supporting the government? Do they not understand that the institution is suffering? ‘If you ask me why this is so, maybe a promise was made to Nawaz Sharif, that promise is being fulfilled. But what would be more cruel for Pakistan?’
Imran Khan said that he is ready to go to jail. He rejected the narrative of his political opponents that he is afraid of going to jail. He said that it will not harm him or his politics.
It should be noted that Maryam Nawaz Sharif has repeatedly said that Imran Khan is shying away from going to jail. In response to these statements, Imran Khan said that Nawaz Sharif himself has ‘escaped out of fear’ twice. Imran Khan said that in case of arrest, he has formed a committee in the party which will take decisions on daily basis and run the party.
Asked if he was afraid that he might be subjected to torture after his arrest, Imran Khan said, ‘I don’t know what will happen in jail, but I am ready. Man should be prepared for everything. (Courtesy of BBC, Urdu)
