At least 53 people were killed in an attack by the so-called Islamic State, or Daesh, in Syria’s central province of Homs on Friday, state media said.

What do we know so far?

Syria’s state-run SANA news agency quoted the head of Tadmir (Palmyra) government hospital, Walid Oudi, as saying that the victims had gunshot wounds to the head.

According to state television, “ISIS terrorists attacked truffle collectors southwest of al-Sukhna town, killing 53 people.” Five other injured persons have been shifted to other hospitals. Sana quoted a person who was injured in the attack as saying that Daesh also burnt their cars.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has also reported the attack and said that the jihadists came on a motorcycle. This organization, which monitors the ongoing war in Syria, says that 46 people have been killed in the attack. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Other ISIS Attacks in Syria

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, several people have been targeted while collecting truffles in different parts of Syria. Last Saturday, 16 people were killed in a similar attack in the Homs region.

Friday’s attack was the deadliest since ISIS attacked in January last year. In January 2022, the extremist group attacked a prison in the northeastern city of al-Hasakah to free militants, killing hundreds. Al-Hasakah is under the control of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

An estimated 6,000 to 10,000 ISIS militants are present in Iraq and Syria. They take advantage of the unsecured border between the two countries to carry out their activities. ISIS once controlled the Homs region, but it is now under the control of the Syrian government and opposition forces.

The US Central Command said on Friday that a key ISIS leader, Hamza al-Humsi, was killed in a helicopter strike in eastern Syria. During this operation, four US Army personnel were also injured.
