Washington: Former South Carolina Governor and United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley has announced that she is a candidate for the US presidency in 2024. “Now is not the time to back down,” he said in a video on Twitter. Rather, it is time to build a strong and proud America.”
She is the second major Republican candidate to announce her candidacy, after her former boss Donald Trump announced in November, the BBC reported. Nikki Haley is the third Indian-American to run for the presidency.
She had said in 2021 that she would not challenge Trump, but in recent months she changed her mind and said the ‘new generation’ needed to come forward. Other Republicans expected to campaign for their party include Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former Vice President Mike Pence.
Earlier, she has criticized the attack of supporters of Donald Trump on the US Parliament on January 6, 2021 and their behavior. The day after this incident, he said that Donald Trump’s activities from the election to this attack will be viewed with criticism in history. Early polls show Donald Trump with a comfortable lead in South Carolina, and Nikki Haley will have a tough race.
A recent survey by polling firm Trafalgar Group of current and potential candidates put Donald Trump first with 43 percent and Miss Haley fourth with 12 percent. Other Indian Americans before him were Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, who did not gain much attention in 2015, and incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris, who sought the 2020 election.
