ISLAMABAD: Renowned poet, writer and playwright Amjad Islam Amjad passed away due to a heart attack at the age of 78. Amjad Islam Amjad’s family members have confirmed his death in Lahore. Family members say that he had been ill for some time.

Amjad Islam Amjad gained fame as a poet, dramatist and critic. Some of his famous plays include Waris, Day and Shiran. Amjad Islam Amjad’s poetry collection Barzakh and translations of modern Arabic poems were published under the title of Mirror. Additionally, translations of poems by African poets were published under the title Bright Poems of Black People. Amjad Islam Amjad was honored with several awards by the Government of Pakistan including Satara Imtiaz, Presidential Medal of Excellence.

Amjad Islam Amjad was born on August 4, 1944 in Lahore. He did his MA (Urdu) from Punjab University in 1967, from 1968 to 1975 he was a teacher in the Urdu Department of MAO College, Lahore. In August 1975 Amjad Islam Amjad was appointed Deputy Director of Punjab Art Council. Amjad Islam Amjad joined the teaching department in MAO College again in the 90s.

Amjad Islam Amjad’s career spanned more than 50 years, during which he wrote more than 40 books and many popular plays of his time. He received several awards including Presidential Medal for Good Performance and Star of Distinction for his literary services and TV writing.
