New York (Web Desk) The US Department of Defense transferred Pakistani-American Majid Khan from Guantanamo Bay detention center to Belize.
According to Sama News, Majid Khan, imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay, was transported to Belize by a 2-hour flight, where he was handed over to local authorities. Majid Khan was found guilty by a military commission in February 2012. Majid Khan was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2021, he completed his sentence.
“I have been given a second chance in life and I intend to make the most of it,” Majid Khan said in a statement, calling him “a productive, law-abiding member of society.” Majid Khan said that I apologize to Allah and to those whom I have hurt.
Secretary of Defense Austin notified Congress of his intention to transfer Majid Khan to the government of Belize on December 22 of last year and, in consultation with Belize’s partners, stated that we had met the requirements for a responsible transfer.
The United States says it appreciates the willingness of the Government of Belize and other partners to support U.S. efforts focused on responsibly reducing the detainee population and ultimately closing the Guantanamo Bay facility. There are still 34 prisoners, of whom 20 are eligible for transfer and 3 are eligible for Board of Review, 9 are in process of military commission while 2 have been sentenced.
