The exiled mayor of Melitopol, Ivan Fedorov, wrote on his Telegram channel that about 200 Russian soldiers were killed and many others wounded in the attack on the hotel complex. Fedorov added that due to lack of space in the city’s hospitals, wounded soldiers were taken to nearby Crimea for medical care. He added that some ambulances were converted into mortuaries. However, the governor appointed by Russia in the area has said that dozens of soldiers were injured and two were killed in the attack.
The target in Melitopol was about 50 miles from the Sea of Azov, within range of the US-supplied HIMARS rocket system, the report said. US-supplied HIMARS systems and the similar UK-made M270 have significantly boosted the Ukrainian military’s precision strike capability.
