Beijing (Daily Pakistan Online) According to a recent study, 64,000 dead babies are born every year in China due to air pollution. A report by the South China Morning Post said this comes despite efforts by the capital Beijing to control pollution over the past 10 years and more.
According to a study conducted in 137 countries, in 2015, 40 percent of stillbirths in Asia, Africa and Latin America were attributed to pollution caused by burning fuel. According to research published in Nature Communications, China ranks fourth among the countries studied in terms of the number of fetal deaths caused by PM 2.5, accounting for 98 percent of stillbirths worldwide.
‘Improved air quality in some of the 137 countries (eg, China) could lead to a reduction in the global burden of stillbirths,’ said Peking University researchers. Therefore, stillbirths can be prevented by meeting the World Health Organization’s air quality targets.’ He stressed that recent efforts by the Chinese government to tackle air pollution have prevented more such deaths.
