On Saturday night, a gunman opened fire at an LGBTQ nightclub in the city of Colorado Springs in the American state of Colorado. Police say at least five people were killed and 18 injured in the attack.

A commemoration of Transgender Day was organized in this nightclub and the shooting incident took place during it.

What do we know about the attack?

The attack took place at Club Q. The nightclub describes itself as a “female and male gay nightclub, hosting theme nights such as karaoke and DJs.” It was reported that Colorado Springs Police Lt. Pamela Castro said at a news conference that a suspect was arrested at the scene.

During a press conference later, police said the suspect was a 22-year-old youth, who was armed with a “long rifle.” He started shooting soon after entering an LGBTQ club. Two “brave” clubgoers intervened to stop the gunman, police said.

“At least two brave individuals inside the club tackled the suspect and were able to fight and prevent the suspect from hitting and harming others,” Police Chief Adrian Vasquez told reporters.

Investigators are still working to determine the motive behind the attack. Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers praised those who tried to stop the gunman, saying “their actions clearly saved lives.”

In June 2016, a gunman opened fire inside Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, killing 49 people and injuring more than 50. It was the largest anti-gay attack in modern American history.

The reaction of the authorities

In a statement released by the White House, President Joe Biden said: ‚ÄúPlaces that are supposed to be safe places to celebrate and celebrate should never be turned into places of terror and violence. Yet it often happens. Do your part to end violence against LGBTQ people.” The president added that Americans “cannot and must not tolerate hate. “

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, himself gay, praised the “brave individuals who stopped the gunman, potentially saving lives,” in a Facebook post. “While we mourn everyone affected by this tragedy, Colorado stands with our LGBT community,” I wrote. Full of condolence messages.

Gun culture in America

Rather than stopping, the number of indiscriminate gun shootings in the United States continues to escalate, and this is yet another recent incident of gun violence on the minds of many Americans. To prevent this, US President Joe Biden recently signed a major federal gun reform law.

In the same year, a gunman opened fire on shoppers in Buffalo, New York, killing 10 people, which was described as racist violence. After the same incident, US lawmakers from the opposition and the ruling party agreed to a bipartisan agreement on gun control. Just two weeks after the Buffalo incident, a shooter killed 19 children and two teachers at a school in Texas.

In July, police arrested a 22-year-old man after a brief chase after a fatal shooting at a Fourth of July Independence Day parade in Highland Park, a suburb of Chicago. According to the authorities, at least six people were killed and 30 injured in the shooting incident.

The United States has a higher rate of gun deaths than any other rich country in the world. For example, in 2019, 4.12 out of every 100,000 people in the United States were killed by guns, compared to only 0.5 in Canada.
