53 bags full of human remains have been found in Mexico since late October and experts are trying to identify them. About 300 people have been killed in Guanajuato’s gang clashes in recent months

Babiana Mendoza stands at the site of an exhumation of remains from a grave not far from where an international arts festival is underway in Guanajuato province, known for its prosperity, culture and sectarian conflict. Mendoza, 32, is searching for his missing brother. They found out that some people in Erapuato, Guanajuato saw a dog with a human hand in its mouth.
Mendoza is a founding member of an organization dedicated to finding missing persons. She says, “People from all over the world have come here to celebrate the Karavantiv festival but we are digging to find the bodies, but I think it’s probably futile because some people are looking for more bodies elsewhere.” will be pressed into the ground.”
Mendoza says a group of forensic experts has recovered 53 bags of human remains since late October and is trying to identify them.
Guanajuato, home to the factories of foreign automobile companies such as Toyota, Honda and General Motors, has seen the bodies of nearly 300 victims of gang violence found in similar circumstances in recent months.
A battle to dominate each other
According to official data, Irapuato, located an hour away from the state capital Guanajuato, is the second most unsafe area. Guanajuato is the most violent province in Mexico where different groups fight each other for dominance. According to official figures, more than 2,400 murders took place between January and September this year, which is about 10 percent of the national total.
Despite the massive bloodshed, the city of 6.1 million is a popular tourist destination. Its colonial-style buildings attract thousands of tourists every year.
Despite the conflict, life goes on
Incidents of gang clashes and murders usually occur in areas far away from tourist spots. On November 9, 9 people were massacred in a bar in Apasio el Alto, about an hour away from Erapuato.
Despite the presence of bloodstains on the side of the road and the cordoning off of the crime scene with security tape, life went on as if nothing had happened.
Pictures published by local newspapers showed bloodied bodies, broken glass and bottles, while a group claimed responsibility for the attack. At least 50 people have been killed in five massacres in Guanajuato over the past five months.
A major drug-trafficking corridor
Guanajuato is an important drug-trafficking corridor between Pacific ports and the United States, according to security affairs expert David Savicado. “It’s a supply route for drugs like fentanyl and cocaine,” he said. Organized crime groups finance local drug dealers in their battle for control of bars and casinos.
According to Guanajuato security official Sofia Hewitt, 9 out of 10 murders in the state are related to the drug trade. He said that although the authorities make arrests, it will be insufficient if the criminal gang is not confronted at the national level.
Mendoza’s efforts today to find human remains have been unsuccessful. She says in a desperate tone. “I hate hearing the words of the (state) governor that he is trying to protect Guanajuato. I hate the statements of the president (Andres Manuel López Obador) when he says that what is happening is It’s not their fault.”
