Rio de Janeiro (Daily Pakistan Online) Former Brazilian congresswoman Flordelise dos Santos was sentenced to 50 years in prison on Sunday for the murder of her husband in 2019. She adopted dozens of children from the slums of Rio de Janeiro. Dos Santos, 61, and her husband, Pastor Anderson do Carmo, were prominent figures in Brazil’s growing evangelical Christian movement. Pastor Anderson was shot and killed in a suburb of Rio de Janeiro in June 2019.
Prosecutors in August 2020 accused dos Santos of plotting the murder, involving his grown children and trying to disguise it as an armed robbery. Prosecutors said the suspected motive for the killing was to gain control over the couple’s finances because the finances were tightly controlled by the husband. Dos Santos enjoyed parliamentary immunity but lost it in August 2021 when her Colleagues voted almost unanimously to oust him.
According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the former congresswoman was found guilty of attempting to kill her husband by poisoning her on at least six occasions, as well as forgery of documents and armed criminal association. Dos Santos was elected as a member of Congress for the conservative Social Democratic Party in 2018.
