According to the United Kingdom’s Office for National Statistics (ONS), India had the highest number of births outside the UK last year with 920,000 people, followed by Poland with 743,000 or 1.2 percent of the population and Pakistan with six. The number of foreign-born citizens has increased by 2.5 million since 2011, from 7.5 million (13.4 percent) to 1 million (16.8 percent).

The list of countries of birth outside the UK in England and Wales has not changed over the past 10 years. Ten years ago, in the 2011 census, India, Poland and Pakistan were the first three countries respectively.

London remained the city with the highest proportion of people born outside the UK and people with non-UK passports. More than four in 10 (40.6 per cent) residents of London in 2021 were born outside the UK, and more than one in five (23.3 per cent) have residents living in London who do not hold a UK passport.
